Judge Blocks Graphic Images on Cigarette Packages - ABC News

Leon found the nine graphic images approved by the Food and Drug Administration in June go beyond conveying the facts about the health risks of smoking or go beyond that into advocacy — a critical distinction in a case over free speech.

Imagine that.....Anti-smoker activists going beyond the facts.....That never happens.

  4. Hi JJ,

I apologize for the long delay in posting your comments here. As you may have noticed, I have not been posting anything here for the last week & 1/2 or so.... There has been a death in my family. I lost someone who was very close to me. To top it off, it was unexpected, as he was much too young to die. Jules and I have also been in the middle of a massive move from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Things will return to normal here in the not too distant future:-)

  6. New Orleans sounds a lot more appealing than LA. When I was travelling in the Far East in the late 60s, I met a few Californians (mostly draftees gone AWOL from Vietnam), and heard from them about the freedoms enjoyed in San Francisco, particularly the epicentre of Haight Ashbury, and I really wanted to visit the place. Nowadays, you couldn't pay me enough to go there. The word "tolerance" seems to have been excised from the Californian dictionary. How things can change in such a short time, eh? Sad.

Anyway, good luck with the move, and I hope New Orleans is good to you. Can you smoke in the bars there?

  7. ..Sorry for the delayed response..I'm just getting settled in here. It's also taken awhile for me to switch my internet service:-)

"Can you smoke in the bars there?"

Yes, in most of them. There is only a ban on smoking in restaurants. However if a restaurant has a separate bar/room apart from the main room, you can smoke, eat, and drink! The anti-smokers are here in full force though...trying to change (by legislative force) the culture here. They have failed several years in a row so far, but they are well funded...enough so that they can afford to take out ads in local magazines. They even have the $$$$ for massive billboards (in this economy!!), which I have seen on the side of the freeways here.

One thing is for sure: It is a hell of a lot free(er) here than in California when it comes to the issue of smoking bans and the NS (Nanny State).
