Medical Errors Cost More Lives Than 2nd Hand Smoke

4 out of 10 patients being misdiagnosed

Those same projections show upwards of 98,000 people die from those same mistakes annually.

But, I thought that 2nd hand smoke was the most dangerous thing in the world.....

  1. You mean umpteenth hand smoke isn't the biggest murderer in the whole Universe?

Well - I simply don't believe that, and nor should anyone else.

Have you told Ding-Dong Dibble-Dobble-Doolally Deborah Arnott that?

  2. When including multiple forms of iatrogenesis (e.g., adverse drug reactions, medical errors, infections of bedsores from poor care of the bedridden), the medical establishment is by far the leading cause of preventable death and disability and associated costs.

IATROGENESIS or IATROGENIC EFFECT (any harm produced by medical conduct)

“We estimated that in 1994 overall 2216000 (1721000-2711000) hospitalized patients had serious ADRs [adverse drug reactions] and 106000 (76000-137000) had fatal ADRs, making these reactions between the fourth and sixth leading cause of death”.

    Including more sources of iatrogenesis:
Doctors Are the Third Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.
    Cause 250,000 Deaths Every Year
From Starfield, B. (2000) Is US Health Really The Best In The World? Journal of the American Medical Association, 284 (4), 483-485.

Including even more sources of iatrogenesis:
    Null et al. (2003)
    Cause 780,000-1,000,000 Deaths Every Year

P.S. The annual death toll in the USA is 2,400,000.
The estimated statistical “death toll” from tobacco in the USA is 450,000
Iatrogenesis is estimated at 700,000-1,000,000 which dwarfs the tobacco “toll” and accounts for more than a third of all deaths per annum. While there are tens upon tens of thousands of questionable antismoking studies, there is only a handful on iatrogenesis. The medical establishment does not like scrutiny of its own activity.
