Turning Fat People into Social Outcasts | Patrick Basham and John Luik | Cato Institute: Commentary

Thanks to Themorrigan1972 for posting this on Twitter.

...Yet another brilliant article from the CATO Institute which confirms what many of us in the smoker community have known all along: denormalization does not, and will not, end with us.

"If government can tell us what we can put into our own bodies, what can it not tell us?" - Hit & Run : Reason Magazine

"What right could be more basic, more inherent in human nature, than the right to choose what substances to put in one’s own body? Whether we’re talking about alcohol, tobacco, herbal cures, saturated fat, or marijuana, this is a decision that should be made by the individual, not the government."

In this Reason magazine article, David Boaz of the CATO Institute tells it like it is..or how it should be..

State Supreme Court upholds Riverside County's dismissal of criminal cases - latimes.com

My fair state is so broke, that it can't even afford to prosecute criminal cases. Now how, I wonder, are all of these outdoor smoking bans going to be enforced that seem to be all the rage at the moment amongst our political elite? I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry (..or be really scared) about our current situation and our crumbling infrastructure, but there is one thing that I am not going to be worrying about anymore: Outdoor smoking bans. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em! ...Not that I'm suggesting anyone to be a "scofflaw" or anything..hehe...

Boy, have I ever been in need of a good laugh! This brought a smile to my face today. Of course, the anti-smokers will be very angry about this, which of course, is to be expected.

88-year-old woman told to butt out - or be evicted

Pat Nurse posted this on Facebook. I don't have the time to write or comment on this, as I need to tend to being a musician, but let me just say that THIS is what truly makes my blood boil. What is the matter with these people who are threatening an 88 year old woman with eviction? Where does such cruelty come from? I just can't seem to wrap my head around such cruelty and intolerance. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Whatever happened to social cohesion and kindness?

Return of the ashtrays in Greece in smoking ban revolt - Yahoo!Xtra Entertainment

Maybe the Greeks have figured out that much of the anti-smoking movement is simply full of crap. I mean, it's not like people don't die or get ill from smoking, but Greece does have one of the highest smoking rates per capita in the world, in addition to one of the longest life expectancy rates in the world. Wow! How can that be? Hmmmmmm.....

I sure wish that we had some of the rebellious spirit over here in the United States. New York, California and Illinois would be great places to start.

NYC Councilwoman harbors totalitarian views

This morning, I received this response from NYC councilwoman Jessica Lappin with regards to Mayor Bloomberg's proposal to ban smoking in all of NYC's parks, harbors, and beaches:

Councilwoman Jessica Lappin informed me that she in fact supports the idea of an outdoor smoke ban not because outdoor smoking in a park is harmful to non-smokers, but because it would help to reduce smoking. Translation: I have the right to tell you how to live your life.

How did it ever come to this, and where are all of the angry Americans that are supposed to tell despotic public servants like Ms. Lappin where to stuff it?

This is about a lot more than smoking.

One World Government, controlled by un-elected Health Officials?

Nation state sovereignty? We don't need no stinking nation state sovereignty, we want un-elected bureaucrats from far away places telling us all what to do....in every corner of the world, so there may be no escape from the Nanny State. (sarc)

Scottish Government Defies Public Opinion

Thanks to Eddie Douthwaite for this update. Not much needs to be said on my part, other than the fact that common sense and decency would (in normal situations, in dealing with folks who have a pragmatic and humanitarian slant towards problem solving) seem to imply that a more humane solution could, and should, be reached when it comes to folks who don't have much else to look forward to at the end of the day other than a relaxing smoke. But, hey, who am I, just a singer in a rock band who despises the no compromise approach of the anti-smoking movement?

Oh, how I wish that we could all just be a little bit nicer to one another. ...Guess that in addition to being a singer in a rock band, I also have a bit of old-school (even though I wasn't alive yet) hippie in me as well... Whatever happened to peace and love anyway?

Poor healthcare may shorten American lives - study | Reuters

But....but....I thought that smoking was the cause of like everything.. So, according to this study, back in 1950 the U.S. ranked 5th in life expectancy. This was when nearly half of the population smoked, ate steak and potatoes, and had martinis for lunch.

Fast forward 60 years.....

Now that many of us have given up on many of the vices that bring us pleasure, we in the USA now rank 49th in life expectancy.

Hmmmmmmmmm.......I'm starting to think that the experts have been misleading us all along.

In Today's News: Radon is dangerous and Smokers Face More Discrimination

This will not come as a surprise to many of us: Radon is more dangerous than second hand smoke...

Radon Gas Leading Cause of Lung Cancer

Nor will this headline come as a surprise to those of us who smoke. We smokers have become all too familiar with the systemic discrimination that has been bequeathed upon us by faceless bureaucrats; it does not surprise us that the many in medical establishment have now chosen to follow in their footsteps. It is now more important to be on the "proper" side of the debate on smoking, even if that means sacrificing the very principles of medicine. What else is one to take from this? That the achievements and contributions of an accomplished and deserving doctor mean nothing, if it is known that he or she is a smoker? Really?

California in dark mood -

I woke up this morning to a dark sky, something that is rare in Southern California. Then, I came across this article in the Sacramento Bee about the current mood of the people here in the sunshine state. Coincidentally, the mood is dark, though the sun will shine again tomorrow and it probably won't rain for another 6 months, the blues are likely to play on it seems.

I often wonder what many of our politicians are thinking in this time of crisis and mass exodus when they create ever more burdensome regulations that only serve to hurt independently owned businesses. Of course, I am making reference to smoking bans, and the more recent epidemic of outdoor bans. Whatever are they thinking? They must have an all together different level of logic than I, because I just can't seem to understand why they would want to put more people out of business. We're quite obviously depressed (both in spirit and finance) here in the land of the sun. Haven't they read this poll?

Licensees Favour Smoking Ban Reform

Licensees Favour Smoking Ban Reform

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR Log (Press Release) – Oct 02, 2010 –

The nationwide survey of 570 pubs (approximately 1% of those remaining) showed only 8% in favour of a total ban on smoking indoors, with 72% proposing smoking and non-smoking rooms. This concurs with a previous survey of working men’s clubs, which showed a massive 98% in favour of separate rooms for smokers.

This confirms what many of us have known all along. Most people are not rabid anti-smokers. Most people favor choice over blanket bans on smoking in privately owned establishments.

There is no further commentary needed here by me. This survey says it all. Hats off to Phil and to Freedom 2 Choose for all of the time and effort dedicated to exposing the other side of the story; the side of the story that has so often gone unheard, from those who are affected the most, and therefore know the truth when it comes to blanket smoking bans and their inevitable effects on privately owned establishments.
