Antis After Rock Musicians

Well, THIS certainly caught my attention...being in a band and all.

Bands between a rock and a hard place
Sep 24, 2010—"The Australian rock bands, Wolfmother and The Vines, have come under fire for agreeing to play a music festival sponsored by a major Indonesian tobacco company, according to a story by Adam Gartrell for Australian Associated Press."

This is especially interesting:

"Simon Chapman and Becky Freeman said that the bands would not have the opportunity ‘to assist a tobacco company in promoting its products’ in Australia because such sponsorships have been illegal there since the early 1990s."

Ok, let me get this straight, Simon and Becky (whoever the hell they are) are implying that Australian law is enforceable in Indonesia.

But wait....Isn't Indonesia its own sovereign nation with its own set of laws? Doesn't its autonomy give it the right to tell anti-smokers in Australia to simply go stuff it? What the anti-smokers seem to be implying here is that they are willing to resort to the outright tyranny and invasion of another country in order to achieve their objective of a smoke-free world.

These people are far more dangerous than tobacco ever could be.

The last that I checked, Indonesia is NOT located in Australia. I mean, ok, they're close to one another, I'll give the antis that, but it is clear that they are separated by water, as indicated by this MAP.

Genetically Modified Salmon Whether We Like It or Not?

FDA won’t allow food to be labeled free of genetic modification: report | Raw Story

WTF? Yet another issue that I have with the FDA, which seems to be implying that, as I sit here eating my salmon breakfast, I have absolutely NO right to know what I'm eating! This is outrageous beyond belief!! Ok, not beyond belief, but outrageous. Let me guess, Monsanto is all buddy, buddy, kissy, kissy with the folks who sit on the board of the FDA. This is food tyranny. How arrogant these people are.

Display ban backlash in Scotland

"Out of the 305 respondents to the consultation exercise, 269, or 88.2 per cent, were opposed, with the small level of support coming mostly from National Health Service trusts and anti-smoking charities."

There's your public consensus for more draconian measures:-)

Legalizing pot would free up police

Maybe when pot is legalized in California, smokers of cannabis will realize that California is fast on its way to making it impossible to smoke anything anywhere? Note to vapors: You are not safe; your "neighbors" may not like the "smell"; expect petty legislation to be aimed at you in the near future. Maybe lovers of the other weed will soon join forces with tobacco users in the struggle for a place to enjoy a legal product?

Anti-Tobacco's Latest Message of Hate

Driving home from band rehearsal last week I came across this poster on the east side of Laurel Canyon Boulevard. This is not the first time that I have encountered such "advertisements". Once, not too long ago, I came across the very same message, although that time, unlike this time, it encompassed an entire side of a building in the trendy Melrose/Fairfax neighborhood.

It has become apparent that anti-smoking is no longer content with merely protecting the health of non-smokers. What they want now is a smoke(er) free world, and it is evident that they are quite willing to stoop to the lowest of common denominators in order to achieve their objective. To encourage this type of outright hatred towards smokers is not only despicable, but it is unacceptable. The irony has not been lost on me that this is occurring in "liberal" Los Angeles, a place that is supposed to be forward thinking. Would this be an acceptable message if it were to be aimed at any other group? I think not.

No-smoking bylaw vilifies smokers and torches liberty

A Short Rant From My Hometown Chicago...

...Last night (I'm home in Chicago) my guitarist and I went to see our old drummer play with his new band. I went outside to have a smoke on the sidewalk and the doorman came out and told me that I had to move. I was outside on a city SIDEWALK, with no one else around me but one other guy who seemed kind of creepy. So this guy (the doorman..not really a man in my book) would rather have me stand away from the window (where I can be seen by the other patrons) in a dark corner somewhere (by MYSELF) in one of the most dangerous cities in the country just for the purpose of following an ordinance that really needs to be broken. He'd rather risk something happening to me (rape, mugging, etc..) than let me smoke out in front of the place.

That was it. I yelled back at him and told him to call the police. He didn't. I did not spend one $$$$$$$ in the place and as soon as my friend's band hit their last chord we were out of there with the intention of NEVER coming back.

What happened to this country?

Rant over..

Warning: third hand smoke in second hand cars

It's official: The anti-smoking movement has gone insane. What more can I say? Every day they come out with more outlandish and unbelievable claims, mostly without being challenged. It has been occurring with such frequency that it is simply almost impossible to keep up with the inaccuracies and the lies, let alone having the energy to write about it.

How the hell has it come to this?

Warning: third hand smoke in second hand cars

Contamination levels? Really?

When do they put us smokers into ghettos? Tomorrow? Next year?

Smoke ban 'is main cause' of pub losses

Wow! A shocking new revelation has emerged! I wonder what the folks at ASH, Johnson & Johnson, RWJF, the WHO, and the rest of the TC taliban will have to say about what has always been glaringly obvious...

New research claims shock proof that the smoking ban has been the main cause of pub closures in the UK.

No Tolerance for Racism

...The title speaks for itself. I detest racists just as much as I detest anti-smokers. Neither are welcome in my life. If you come across an anti, or a racist, speak out against them...or become one of them.

Putting Things Into Perspective

I'm currently in the midst of reading a very interesting book entitled Hyping Health Risks by Geoffrey C. Kabat. In doing so I have stumbled upon some useful information that puts my mind to rest a bit with regards to my moderate smoking habit:

A former smoker has a RR 3.5 (2.8-4.4) for developing lung cancer.

A CURRENT smoker of 1-9 cigarettes a day has a RR 4.1 (2.9-5.8) for developing lung cancer.

A current smoker of 40-80 cpd has a RR 18.7 ((14.5-24.0) for developing lung cancer.

...and when it comes to heart disease...

The RR for a former smoker is 1.2 (1.1-1.3).

The RR for a current smoker of 1-9 cpd is 1.2 (1.1-1.3)!!!!!

The RR for a current smoker of 40+ cpd is 1.9 ((1.7-2.1).

To put things into perspective a bit, a former smoker has roughly the same RR for both lung cancer and heart disease as that of a current smoker of 1-9 cpd.

Hence, I think that I'll continue on having my 5-6 smokes a day, thank you very much.
