Some Mich. bars to allow smoking New Year's Eve - USATODAY.com

The Protect Private Property Rights in Michigan Movement has started a Facebook page. Check it out and show your support for private property rights. There are also some interesting comments over there that are very telling about the antics of the antis, like the one bar owner who has received phone calls from "non-smokers" that want to make a reservation for this evening at her bar. A reservation at a bar? One caller mentioned that they even wanted to bring their child to the bar! Oh, the bar owner goes on to tell readers something like this: "Thing is, we have caller ID, and these phone calls are coming from as far away as Maryland!" Hmmmmmmm.....The paid antis are out in full force to try to put a stop to this. To them I say, go get a life and stay out of ours.

EU bans herbal remedies: another victory for corporate interests

Thanks to Rose for posting this on Dr. Siegel's blog-

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/danielhannan/100070000/eu-bans-herbal-remedies-another-victory-for-corporate-interests-over-the-consumer/

I for one, am a really big fan of herbal remedies and organic foods (when I can afford them). This is yet another egregious abuse of power being perpetrated by unelected bureaucrats upon the rights of free citizens across Europe. Unbelievable. I sure hope that they don't try to pull this crap in the U.S.. Oh, wait...they ARE trying to pull this crap in the U.S..

Back to the E.U...

How is it that the E.U. has gained so much power over sovereign nations that have their own elected representatives?

Daniel Hannan states a possible explanation for such madness:

"Such a ban would never have got through the national legislatures. MPs would have been deluged, as MEPs were, by letters from thousands of constituents who felt that their health was being imperilled. In a national parliament, this would almost certainly have been enough to block the proposal; but the EU was designed more or less explicitly to withstand public opinion. Lobbyists understood from the outset that their best chance was to push through in Brussels what no democratic parliament would accept. See, once again, how the EU has become a mechanism for the advancement of corporate interests in defiance of the common weal."

Point well taken.

Trying to Estimate Cancer Rates in Ancient Times - NYTimes.com

Thanks to the Morrigan1972 for posting this on Twitter-

"As scientists continue to investigate, there may be comfort in knowing that cancer is not entirely civilization’s fault. In the normal course of life a creature’s cells must be constantly dividing — millions of times a second. Sometimes something will go wrong."

Point well taken...This statement is rather telling...and it appears to be in contrast to the current onslaught that we are currently treated to, courtesy of the "progressive" healthist agenda that we are bombarded with on a daily basis. To the do-gooders of today I'd like to say that I, of course, would also like to live longer, feel better, and look younger for longer; these are all great ideas that I personally would like to aspire to; however, I would also like to enjoy myself while I happen to occupy space on this planet. Perhaps the moral of the story below is that we should take a different approach to life extension, rather than that of the neo-prohibitionist agenda. We should instead focus on an agenda that values freedom of choice and the free market. I have faith in the great intellect of the human mind when it comes to solving problems and issues of health, when it is free and unfettered of course.

So, when is that safer cigarette going to arrive again? Something tells me that the Chinese might beat us to it.

Prohibition thwarts progress.

As the article emphasizes below, we now live longer now than ever before, even though cancer has been around since pre-historic times. We've figured out a way to increase the lifespan, now let's figure out a way to cure cancer while preserving the idea of our Democratic Republic.

...One commenter suggests that all folks that smoke and patronize casinos are losers. Oh, but the hatred and bigotry does not end there, this low-life of a person also wishes an early death to all smokers. Nice, huh? It's a good thing that our government isn't further perpetrating hatred and propaganda against smokers as well, because that might give bigots a free pass on being called out for their detestable views. Nah, that would NEVER happen in America.

With that said, the article (linked below) itself is actually a good one. Enjoy.

Holy (pun intended) crap! Maybe this is a sign that the South will become more tolerant towards that "other" weed. Maybe this will signify the dawn of at least a few truly Libertarian minded states in the South where one can have a cigarette in a "smoking allowed" (tobacco) bar or restaurant, alongside one's pot smoking friend(s) without having to worry about being thrown in jail. I know, I'm dreaming.

However, there is no evidence that the percentage of smokers in a company has any effect on the company's premiums. Smoke ban may be altered » Standard-Times

Is the tide beginning to turn?

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo City Council will consider a variety of amendments to the smoking ban ordinance at its meeting today — including the possible exemption of small bars from the ban.

...and here's an opinion piece where the author seems to be in a huff about the possibility of the ban in Wisconsin either being overturned, or at the very least, altered. There are a few interesting comments that follow:

Keep Smoking Ban

In Joplin, Missouri a similar trend leaning towards smaller government seems to be taking place:

"JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin City Council on Monday night declined to place on an election ballot a workplace smoking ban sought by Smoke-Free Joplin, and the organization now will decide whether to launch an initiative petition drive."

Of course, we tobacco smokers could see this coming....Just because it's legal doesn't mean that officials at the city, county and state level won't do everything in their power to make something that they don't like illegal by defacto decree.

I've often wondered what would happen if, instead of throwing each other under the bus in a competition to show who is more or less righteous than the other, freedom lovers everywhere would stick together in the effort(s) to be able to put what we want to into our bodies, be it tobacco, marijuana (medical and recreational), e-cigarette vapor, alcohol, salty foods, fatty foods, organic foods and supplements, raw milk, etc.,; because after all, who doesn't want and deserve full autonomy over their own body?

I am a smoker of about 5-6 (sometimes a couple more when under stress) cigarettes a day; however, just because I'm a smoker doesn't' mean that I am not interested in health issues. I am a firm believer that eating fruits, vegetables, and taking certain supplements CAN really improve the quality of one's life, even if you're a smoker. However, the current anti-smoker church seems content on continuing on with their version of harm reduction, which inversely is anything but. Quit or die is the only option that we are left with, even as the FDA has been assigned with the job of reducing the negative effects of smoking. I oppose this approach, and so should everyone who actually knows or loves someone who is, or has ever been, a smoker. There are always going to be smokers; this is reality.

I simply do not believe that there is nothing that can be done to counteract the carcinogenic compounds in cigarette smoke. Sometimes it pays to be stubborn. The other day, after reading up on several studies that praise the anti-cancer compounds of curcurmin, I wondered what would happen if it was to be added as an ingredient in cigarettes. I didn't expect to find anything when I googled "turmeric cigarette", but much to my surprise, this is what I found:

Bubbling hookah smoke through heat-solubilized curcumin/turmeric and incorporation of the curry spice as an additive or filter in cigarettes to minimize tobacco smoke-related toxicants

"Current medical evidence suggests that there is little or no risk reduction associated with light and ultra-light cigarettes use compared to regular cigarettes, even though the majority of smokers think to the contrary [18]. Using curcumin/turmeric in the cigarette itself or dissolved in water (for hookah) may well change this on account of the well documented anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties of curcumin [2,9–12]. "

"Studies have shown a dose-dependent depletion of free radicals by the addition of the bioflavonoid pycnogenol from pine bark extract to cigarette filters [5]."

..........................

Whoa Nelly!! Why isn't the FDA demanding that curcurmin and pine park be used as a form of harm reduction for active smokers? How many lives could be saved if this simple measure were to be taken? Is the silence on this issue a result of the mentality that smokers deserve to die?

....and that's not the only interesting study that I encountered:

Protective role of curcumin against nicotine-induced genotoxicity on rat liver under restricted dietary protein.

"Curcumin reduced the nicotine-induced DNA damage percentage of the liver tissues more significantly (P<0.001) in protein restricted condition. Curcumin proved its potential to function against genotoxic effect by reducing the DNA damage activity of nicotine and minimized the percentage of DNA damage (50-60%) in protein restricted dietary condition. Curcumin reduced the nicotine-induced DNA damage percentage of the liver tissues more significantly (P<0.001) in protein restricted condition. Curcumin proved its potential to function against genotoxic effect by reducing the DNA damage activity of nicotine and minimized the percentage of DNA damage (50-60%) in protein restricted dietary condition. The degree of nicotine-induced genotoxicity therefore can be effectively compensated by the protective effect of curcumin in protein stress condition."

.....................

Curcumin combats against cigarette smoke and ethanol-induced lipid alterations in rat lung and liver.

"Altered lipid, lipoprotein profile and bile acid excretion were observed in CS+EtOH rats along with premalignant pathological state in tissues. In treated rats, the levels were maintained at near-normal levels along with near-normal histology."

"This biochemical picture on cotreatment with curcumin suggests that curcumin could counteract the injurious effects of combined CS and EtOH and thus might help to reduce the risk of hyperlipidemic disorders which develop due to smoking and drinking."

......................

Pycnogenol in cigarette filters scavenges free radicals and reduces mutagenicity and toxicity of tobacco smoke in vivo.

"Addition of the bioflavonoid pine bark extract Pycnogenol to cigarette filters depleted free radicals in a dose dependent manner. This was paralleled by a reduction of toxicity and mutagenicity in rodent test models. In this model system, the acute toxicity of cigarette smoke was markedly reduced by up to 70% in rodents with 0.4 mg Pycnogenol in filters. "

......................

...and there are more, a lot more studies on harm reduction, some of which study the effects of charcoal filters, etc.. When I have the time, I plan on reading up on these as well.

The point is this: We live in the real world, the anti-smokers do not. Abstinence only is a mirage that is costing the lives of real people. This is a human rights issue and it is time that we make it known as such. No one deserves to die needlessly, not even us smokers.

Get to work FDA.

A Case for Early Lung Cancer Detection

""Sixty percent of lung cancer cases diagnosed in 2006 were in people who had quit smoking, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent report on the subject. (Another 21 percent were in people who had never smoked.) Given prevailing trends, ex-smokers' share of cases could be even higher now."

L.A. City Council Votes to Draft Ordinance Banning Smoking Everywhere

Well, well, well...Three things are now official:

1) Our officials in L.A. loathe their smoking constituents.
2) They don't resemble anything remotely close to being liberty loving Americans.
3) You can't trust them.

Funny how earlier in the year our lovely council-members voted to ban smoking at all outdoor venues/establishments, while exempting venues for those 18 and over. That was supposed to be a "compromise". You can never compromise with tyrants, which is what they are. Case in point: Here they are, less than a year later, implementing even more draconian measures, when clearly they tried to fool us into believing that their intention was to be "fair". Bullshit.

How many more jobs will we lose now? How many more restaurants and clubs will shut their doors? If people do not rebel against this illegal infringement upon smokers' right to assemble, then I am afraid that we're all in trouble in this country.

As I always say, this is about a lot more than smoking.

Bummer! Dutch to ban tourists from buying pot - Travel - News - msnbc.com

What the hell is going on in the Netherlands? First they ban tobacco smoking in coffee shops and bars, only to repeal the tobacco smoking ban in small shops and bars (yay!), and now this? I have a nagging suspicion that this is more about pressure (ie., from the U.S., WHO, etc..) from outside the Netherlands, rather than being about crime, which is likely to rise due to this recent decision. Why the suspicion on my part? About a month ago I received an e-mail about a law that was being proposed in the U.S. Senate with the aim of arresting and convicting U.S. citizens who choose to indulge in the other "evil" weed abroad in places where it is legal; hence, U.S. citizens visiting Amsterdam comes to mind. In other words, the idea is to say that U.S. law (with regards to drug issues) applies to U.S. citizens no matter where they may go to indulge, even on foreign soil. Oh, how I wish that I saved the link for this one, as I cannot find it now.

"And as regards the “occasional smoker”, Mr Maurer is incorrect to suggest that a few cigarettes cause the same damage as a lot of them. The first law of toxicology is that “the dose is the poison”. FDA Proposes Graphic Labels for Cigarettes to Scare Smokers Into Quitting

Now this is just lovely. The FDA wants to put pictures of corpses and rotting teeth on cigarette packs. Funny, at my last visit to the dentist, I was told that my teeth are in fact, quite white. This abuse is getting to be quite old. Here's a concept that maybe our government can grasp: mind your own business and get off of our backs. Your job is to protect us from muggers and thieves, not to bully us into your vision of "healthful" living.

ITGA launches petition against WHO proposals

The WHO wants to reduce tobacco farming worldwide.

I would much rather have legitimate tobacco farmers than cartel farmers... If the WHO and its band of unelected bureaucrats get its way there will be million of folks out of work, not only here in America, but in countries with very fragile infrastructures to begin with. The world economy also comes to mind. Currently, over 1.5 billion people the world over are smokers. How can the actions of global tobacco control NOT affect the world economy? Surely, as we have learned from the failed experiment of prohibition, it's quite obvious that people will still continue on smoking, well, because they WANT to. The only objective likely to be attained is an undesirable one, one that is likely to line the pockets of the new cartels that will form to fill the void. I envision that the rest of the world will begin to invest in building more prisons too, just like we do here in the good ole' USA; a good investment if you're an investor in the prison industrial complex, but not so good for all of the folks that will be out of work and ensnared in the iron claws of the neo-healthist church of anti-vice. I would imagine that this will not be good for the health of smokers either, many of whom will likely begin to turn to smoking un-regulated tobacco as their choices become more limited on the legal market. How can harm reduction be achieved if tobacco is driven underground? Oh, but I'm sure that the WHO has taken THAT into consideration, right?

I guess that the do-gooders have learned nothing from the drug war.

Here is a snippet from the forthcoming link below:

"The WHO has rejected ITGA’s request for a seat at the discussion tables, dismissing farmers as interferences."

Sound familiar? Bar and restaurant owners who have been dismissed from the conversation by tobacco control in front of so many city councils, state and national legislatures the world over can relate I'm sure. And what of us 1.5 billion smokers, what are they to do with us? We're all just a big interference to them. The fact that we're people with the right to disagree with them is irrelevant in their eyes. ...Quite despotic they are...

NYC Councilwoman harbors totalitarian views

This morning, I received this response from NYC councilwoman Jessica Lappin with regards to Mayor Bloomberg's proposal to ban smoking in all of NYC's parks, harbors, and beaches:

Councilwoman Jessica Lappin informed me that she in fact supports the idea of an outdoor smoke ban not because outdoor smoking in a park is harmful to non-smokers, but because it would help to reduce smoking. Translation: I have the right to tell you how to live your life.

Thanks to Eddie Douthwaite for this update. Not much needs to be said on my part, other than the fact that common sense and decency would (in normal situations, in dealing with folks who have a pragmatic and humanitarian slant towards problem solving) seem to imply that a more humane solution could, and should, be reached when it comes to folks who don't have much else to look forward to at the end of the day other than a relaxing smoke. But, hey, who am I, just a singer in a rock band who despises the no compromise approach of the anti-smoking movement?

Now that many of us have given up on many of the vices that bring us pleasure, we in the USA now rank 49th in life expectancy.

California in dark mood -

I woke up this morning to a dark sky, something that is rare in Southern California. Then, I came across this article in the Sacramento Bee about the current mood of the people here in the sunshine state. Coincidentally, the mood is dark, though the sun will shine again tomorrow and it probably won't rain for another 6 months, the blues are likely to play on it seems.

I often wonder what many of our politicians are thinking in this time of crisis and mass exodus when they create ever more burdensome regulations that only serve to hurt independently owned businesses. Of course, I am making reference to smoking bans, and the more recent epidemic of outdoor bans. Whatever are they thinking? They must have an all together different level of logic than I, because I just can't seem to understand why they would want to put more people out of business. We're quite obviously depressed (both in spirit and finance) here in the land of the sun. Haven't they read this poll?

Licensees Favour Smoking Ban Reform

Licensees Favour Smoking Ban Reform

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR Log (Press Release) – Oct 02, 2010 –

The nationwide survey of 570 pubs (approximately 1% of those remaining) showed only 8% in favour of a total ban on smoking indoors, with 72% proposing smoking and non-smoking rooms. This concurs with a previous survey of working men’s clubs, which showed a massive 98% in favour of separate rooms for smokers.

This confirms what many of us have known all along. Most people are not rabid anti-smokers. Most people favor choice over blanket bans on smoking in privately owned establishments.

Antis After Rock Musicians

Well, THIS certainly caught my attention...being in a band and all.

Bands between a rock and a hard place
Sep 24, 2010—"The Australian rock bands, Wolfmother and The Vines, have come under fire for agreeing to play a music festival sponsored by a major Indonesian tobacco company, according to a story by Adam Gartrell for Australian Associated Press."

This is especially interesting:

"Simon Chapman and Becky Freeman said that the bands would not have the opportunity ‘to assist a tobacco company in promoting its products’ in Australia because such sponsorships have been illegal there since the early 1990s."

Ok, let me get this straight, Simon and Becky (whoever the hell they are) are implying that Australian law is enforceable in Indonesia.

But wait....Isn't Indonesia its own sovereign nation with its own set of laws? Doesn't its autonomy give it the right to tell anti-smokers in Australia to simply go stuff it? What the anti-smokers seem to be implying here is that they are willing to resort to the outright tyranny and invasion of another country in order to achieve their objective of a smoke-free world.

These people are far more dangerous than tobacco ever could be.

The last that I checked, Indonesia is NOT located in Australia. I mean, ok, they're close to one another, I'll give the antis that, but it is clear that they are separated by water, as indicated by this MAP.
